About Kwan Tee Pagoda

The Kwan Tee or Guan Di Pagoda is the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere and the oldest one in Mauritius. Located at Les Salines, on a Longitude of -20°9'42.12" and Latitude 57°29'31.2", it faces the sea and against the mountains. Its construction and location  abides by the principles of spirituality. The pagoda is a very peaceful place with its majestic piece of land and beautiful gardens full of coconut trees in the front of the yard and at the back and a few seasonal fruit trees.  The Kwan Tee pagoda is an oasis of peace and tranquillity though located in one of the most busiest and stressful place and capital of Mauritius. It is a perfect place for meditation.

Kwan Tee Pagoda was the first  Chinese Pagoda that was built in the Indian Ocean

We are at the service of the community. Come and pray and attend our special events or just spend a quiet moment in the Pagoda. You are going to experience an internal moment of peace and joy.

The pagoda was built by Hahime Choissane. and his coterie was inaugurated on 29 January 1842 as the Cohan Tai Biou or Kwan Tee. Hahime, the Kapitan retreated with his followers into a secret society called the Zhongyitang association grouped around the Kwan Tee pagoda.

The cult of Kwan Tee is associated with the god  of wealth - Choisan. Kwan Tee or Guan Di is also the god of war and the righteousness and the benefactor. There are  smaller altars inside the pagoda like Ma Chou protector of sailors and Kwan Yin, giver of Children. There is also an ancestor cult altar. The oldest tablet in the pagoda was affixed there circa 1841 and was restored in 1890. There is also a bell which dates back from 1871. Another tablet was offered in 1868 by the disciples of the Zhongyitang association which is believed to have been created by Hahime Choissane.

The red, green and yellow are the predominant colours in the Chinese pagoda: they represent happiness, prosperity and purity.

Each year, the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, Guan Di's birthday is celebrated. "This celebration is known as" Fête Mine", an important event in the city of Port Louis. That day, offerings are made to the highest rank of warrior  deity. After a religious ceremony, fried dishes noodles are distributed to the guests.

PAGODA KWAN TEE

WELCOME to KWAN TEE PAGODA
We are gathered this morning for the HONOURING ANCESTORS’ ceremony on the occasion of the Spring Festival also called Chinese New Year. Indeed, the year of the WATER RABBIT gives way to the Year of the WOOD DRAGON.

Honouring Ancestor has a long history in China and has been passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years. In Chinese culture, it is believed that even if ancestors have passed away, their souls still exist and can bring either misfortune or blessings to their descendants. Through offerings and rituals, people can communicate with the souls of their ancestors.

Therefore, Chinese people devoutly revere their ancestors on important occasions and festivals, offering them various foods before meals begin. This tradition of “ancestors eat first” shows respect for the deceased as if they were still alive.

Another reason for Honouring Ancestor  is that the Chinese believe that the traditional concept of filial piety is the most important of all virtues. Honouring ancestors is a way of showing respect for ancestors and expressing nostalgia for them. Even ancestors who have passed away must be respected as if they were still alive.

One of the most important times for Ancestor Worship is the Chinese New Year. It is an important custom to pay respect to ancestors during Chinese New Year. The most common time for rituals is before New Year's Eve dinner. On New Year's Eve, as night falls, people set up offerings, burn incense, and then the younger generations kneel and bow, saying “Ancestors, welcome home for the New Year". According to legend, the souls of the deceased cannot move during the day, so worship takes place after dark.

The United Nations has recognized the Lunar New Year as one of its optional holidays:
The resolution to honor the Lunar New Year as a floating public holiday was unanimously approved at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday, December 22, 2023.

The Chinese Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) is a public holiday in Mauritius

As early as 1870-1872, Sino-Mauritians were already celebrating the Chinese New Year. I
In his book SUB TROPICAL RAMBLES in THE LAND OF THE APHANATERYX, published in 1873 in Washington, United States, Nicolas Pike, American Consul in Mauritius at the time, gave a detailed and vivid account of a very colorful event that took place right where we are right now.

We cannot conclude without paying tribute to Hahime Choisanne, a rich merchant from the province of Fujian in China and founder of the Kwan Tee Pagoda in 1842.

It should be noted that in May 2016, the Kwan Tee Pagoda was listed on the National Heritage list by the Ministry of Arts and Culture and that in August 2016, it received the Medal of the City of Port Louis for his contribution in the field of religion, culture and society.

Ladies and gentlemen,
I spoke to you about the origin of Honouring Ancestors and its importance during the Chinese New Year.
I would like, in this NEW YEAR of the WOOD DRAGON, to make an appeal to Parents/Grandparents to inculcate their children and grandchildren to show more RESPECT for SENIORS, more RESPECT for ELDERLY PEOPLE and encourage them to preserve the Culture of the Ancestors. This would already be a big step towards making them responsible CITIZENS for a better society of tomorrow.

The Year of the Wood Dragon 2024 could bring a breath of change, progress and innovation to a country like Mauritius, which is already recognized for its dynamism, diversity and creativity. The Wood Dragon is a sign of power, wisdom and luck, which encourages people to achieve great things and transform the world.

The Year of the Wood Dragon 2024 could therefore be an opportunity to strengthen the economic, social and cultural development of Mauritius, by focusing on promising sectors, original initiatives and fruitful collaborations. It could also be an opportunity to face the environmental, health and political challenges that arise, by adopting a courageous, optimistic and flexible attitude.
Before closing, I would like to thank Wilson Chan, the manager of the Pagoda for organizing this ceremony and the smooth running of the Pagoda.

I also thank the generous donors, the MUNICIPALITY OF PORT LOUIS for logistical help, MBCTV and other media and the Police.

My thanks also go to my colleagues on the management committee for their support, advice and help.
On behalf of my Colleagues, I wish you all a Happy and Prosperous Year of the Dragon.
